Tallow Tree Services Pty Ltd • November 15, 2021

Australian summers are notorious for being scorching hot. While many of us tend to avoid the heat of summer in the cool air conditioning, there’s no doubt that being able to spend the hot sultry afternoons in our backyards is the ultimate way to enjoy summer. With this in mind, there’s no arguing that the best way to do this is from the comfort of a shady tree or two. If your backyard is lacking the shady trees you want or you’re yet to plant any, we can help. Take a look at here the best trees that provide shade in Australian summer.

1. Japanese Maple

The Japanese Maple is a favourite all around the world for many reasons. With their stunning leaves and glowing autumn colour display, Japanese Maples make for wonderful backyard shade trees. With many different varieties available, you’ll be sure to find just the right tree for your garden, no matter the size of your backyard. Japanese Maples have a reputation for being a bit finicky and require protection from the hottest and windiest weather. However, if you treat them with a little TLC and provide them with the right growing environment with rich, well-drained soil, they make for wonderful shade trees.

2. Jacaranda

The Jacaranda tree is famous throughout Australia for its beautiful, bright purple flowers and stunning canopies. The Jacaranda can grow to be quite large, so they are not suited to smaller gardens, however, if you have the space for them, they’re wonderful additions to any outdoor space. Perfect for warm and tropical areas, Jacaranda is the perfect low maintenance option that will provide plenty of shade throughout the hotter summer months.

3. Frangipani

Frangipani trees are wonderful additions to any Australian garden. A deciduous tree that bursts back into life in spring and summer, Frangipani produce beautiful and highly fragrant flowers that will make your garden an oasis. Flower colour can come in all shades of the rainbow, from creamy white through to dark crimson and hot pink. A hardy tree that thrives in poor growing conditions and coastal environments, the large leaves of the Frangipani provide plenty of shade in the summer months.

4. Mock Orange

You may commonly see the Mock Orange tree as a hedging plant, however, if left to their own devices, the Mock Orange makes a fantastic shading tree. Growing to a relatively modest height of approximately 5-metres, the Mock Orange is an evergreen tree that produces small, beautifully fragrant white flowers throughout the hotter months. Easy to care for and fairly pest resistant, this is a fast-growing shade tree that will look wonderful in your backyard.

5. Tahitian Lime

Tahitian Lime trees are fruit-bearing trees that do particularly well in warmer climates. They thrive in hot, sunny positions out of the way of strong winds. Not only do they produce plenty of delicious citrus fruit, but they also bear plenty of small white flowers that are delicately scented. With the ability to thrive in large containers, Tahitian Limes are fantastic shade options for both the backyard and patio.
