Signs Your Tree Needs To Be Removed

Tallow Tree Services Pty Ltd • February 4, 2021

It’s sad when you have to consider removing a tree. Trees are wonders of Mother Nature and are often beautiful features in your garden. Sadly, like any living thing they age and deteriorate. Ancient, damaged or diseased trees can pose risks to people and property and it becomes necessary to find an arborist to undertake tree removal in Byron Bay. Taking down a tree is a job best left to a professional, especially if you want the stump removed.

There are some signs that your tree is dead and is a potential hazard and that it is time to call Tallow Tree Services. Here’s how to determine the health of your tree.

Check the trunk

The trunk’s condition provides a good picture of the structural integrity of your tree. If there are cavities, cracks, bulges or wounds, these are indications the tree is not in a happy state. These may also be a clue that harmful pathogens have found entry into the inner trunk. Another indication is that the wood beneath the bark is brown and dry. This means the cambium (the growing layer) is not doing well.

What about the bark?

Bark is a tree’s skin and provides protection against harsh climatic conditions, diseases , and pests. The key signs are dead and flaking bark, and also “bleeding” bark. This is when you can see sap oozing from the bark. It’s an indication that the cambium could have a bacterial or fungal infection, or burrowing insects are causing the problem. Inspect the branches.

A healthy tree has an abundance of strong branches with lots of twigs and growing offshoots. Om an unhealthy tree you will find dead or hanging branches in the crown and fine twigs without any growing buds at the ends.

Check the leaves

There should be a healthy growth of leaves, especially dense in the crown. A thinning crown is a problem (unless it is a deciduous tree doing its annual shedding). Also look at the colour. Unless it is a coloured species, leaves should be green and lush as well as having a uniform shape and size.

Don’t forget the roots

Did you know that 50 per cent of a tree’s roots are in the top six inches of ground? Roots should not be disturbed, damaged, or exposed. If you see any of these signs, you need a professional tree assessment from a qualified arborist. Tallow Tree Services is happy to identify how to proceed.
